It’s risen a long way from its humble beginnings as the blogging software b2/cafelog to become the dominant Content Management System on the web, powering 62.8% of CMS powered websites and a staggering 43.2% of all websites² at time of writing in early 2024.

One of the attractive features of WordPress is its vast library of ready-made plugins offering all sorts of extended functionality. You may have noticed the acronyms on this page are marked up with a handy tooltip, this is done automatically using my plugin Acronyms 2, but if there isn’t anything off the shelf to fit your need, I can develop a custom plugin to fill the gap.

So what exactly is WordPress?

WordPress is the most popular CMS in the world, and a very good choice for anyone who wants to manage the content of their own website.

What's the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org?

WordPress is the CMS software you can download from wordpress.org and install on your own web server. Wordpress.com is a little different: it's a hosted service similar to Blogger. They use WordPress, but your site and content live on someone else's server rather than fully in your control.

Do you work with page builders?

In my experience page builders are bloated and inefficient. I craft lean and high performance themes using native WordPress blocks.
